The Department of Chemistry of B.K.C. College started its journey with teaching of Intermediate Science in 1956 and Undergraduate Course in 1963 under the University of Calcutta. From 2009, the College came under the newly founded "West Bengal State University" .
Right from the beginning the Department has been meticulous in maintaining high standards in terms of teaching and students performance throughout. Large no of alumni well established in India and abroad in academic and industrial field reflects the tradition of excellence in Chemistry education.

The core subject Chemistry is of high demand. Even an elementary course of chemistry has a substantial impact on our daily lives. In view of these considerations every effort is made by the faculty members of the Department to invoke passion of chemistry among students to apply it in the wider fields. Teaching of Chemistry is undoubtedly incomplete without practical classes. The Chemistry department is proud to maintain separate spacious laboratory for Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry with all standard facilities and a separate Research Laboratory with basic infrastructural facilities and with some advanced Instruments. The Departmental seminar library and the College Central Library are adequate to meet the basic study material requirements of the students.
Other infrastructural facilities like Computers with Internet connectivity, a dedicated Balance-Room for analytical work, teaching with the aid of projectors to provide audio-visual inputs, etc. have long been in practice with the Chemistry Department at this College.

Apart from the classroom teaching, all the faculty members try to provide special guidance and academic counselling to the students whenever needed. Special attention is given to the students who are below average.
"Chem-Club" was established for developing academic and socio-cultural activities of students and to provide proper incentive and inspiration for the pursuit of scientific knowledge in vigorous way by broadening their scientific outlook.
The department publishes wall magazine (W-alchemy) annually.
The department regularly organizes student's seminar, talks and lectures of the distinguished speakers, subject experts and outside guests on the subject of the scientific interest.

Faculty members of this Department are actively involved in inter-disciplinary research activities and published a number of articles in different journals and presented a number of papers in seminars and conferences. The Department has been selected as the Centre for assisting and guiding the students pursuing M.Sc. projects under West Bengal State University.
Presently Three UGC sponsored projects are undergoing with the supervisions of Dr. K. K. Nandi, Dr. Swarup Manna and Dr. Anshupriya Shome.
